From a Navy rocket range to Topsail Island's first town
Before Surf City existed as a town, the U.S. Navy ran Operation Bumblebee here from 1946 to 1948 — a guided-missile and ramjet-engine test program with Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Lab that launched roughly 200 experimental rockets from a Sears Landing launch pad, tracked by eight photographic towers, several of which still stand on the island today. The Navy left in 1948, and Surf City incorporated the following year, March 23, 1949, as the island's first municipality, growing out of a small fishing village.
