From Young's Crossroads to a woman-led town hall
Maysville was chartered in 1880 and formally incorporated in 1897, having grown up around a crossroads once known as Young's Crossroads before taking the May family's name — John D. May helped found the settlement's first school, "May's School," and the name stuck to the whole community. In 1925, Maysville elected Mrs. Annie Koonce Jenkins mayor, one of the first women in North Carolina to hold the office; she served six years.
